Megan Willson is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pharmacotherapy Department of Washington State University College of Pharmacy.  Megan enjoys lecturing on cardiovascular topics as well as patient simulation scenarios in patient care laboratories. She also serves as preceptor to acute care fourth year pharmacy students in the area of internal medicine.

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND ANTICOAGULATION UPDATES

Objectives:

1.  Know and apply medication characteristics including mechanism of action, monitoring parameters, cautions, and contraindications for medications for the care of a patient with Atrial Fibrillation.
2.  Determine appropriate anticoagulation for a patient with atrial fibrillation.
3.  Determine appropriate rate or rhythm control based on patient characteristics.
4.  Classify a person based on type of atrial fibrillation.
5.  Review physiology and pathophysiology of clotting disorders.
6.  Discuss direct acting oral anticoagulation evidence, place in therapy, dosing, adverse effects, and other frequently asked questions.
7.  Determine appropriate treatment of bleeding for a patient receiving anticoagulation.
