Dr. W. Steven Pray, Ph.D., D.Ph., Bernhardt Professor Emeritus

Dr. W. Steven Pray is a Bernhardt Professor Emeritus at the College of Pharmacy, Southwestern Oklahoma State University. During his 42-year academic career, he specialized in self-care with nonprescription products. He wrote the monthly “Consult Your Pharmacist” column for U.S.Pharmacist for 25 years and is the author of over 400 papers in the pharmacy and medical literature. He authored four textbooks on Nonprescription Products. He has provided hundreds of hours of live continuing education across the country. He received teaching awards, as well as the national Lyman Award for excellence in research and the Henry Cade Award guarding the integrity of NABPLEX. He has consulted with legal firms and industry. Finally, he worked thousands of hours as a staff pharmacist in community pharmacies of all types, and he managed a free clinic pharmacy for 17 years.

Objectives:

  1.  Describe the development of a law that allows manufacturers to market OTC products of unknown safety and efficacy.
  2.  Given an herbal or non-herbal dietary supplement, list its alleged helath benefits, and discuss its FDA status in regard to safety and efficacy.
  3.  List tips to allow patients to recognize unproven medical products and therapies.
  4.  Given an unproven product or therapy not normally found inside the pharmacy, be able to describe its alleged benefits and dangers to patients who ask about it.
