Dr. Joshua Neumiller, Pharm D., CDCES, FADCES, FASCP
Washington State University
Joshua Neumiller is Vice-Chair and Professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy at Washington State University (WSU). Josh is a contributing author of the ADA books Medication for the Treatment of Diabetes and Practical Insulin. He is past Editor-in-Chief for the ADA journal Diabetes Spectrum and served as Chairman of the ADA’s Professional Practice Committee from 2018-2019 whose primary responsibility is revising the ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes each year. In addition to his work at WSU, Josh holds a research appointment with Providence Medical Research Center (PMRC) in Spokane, Washington and is an investigator with the Center for Kidney Disease Research, Education and Hope (CURE-CKD). Josh was the 2021 ADCES Diabetes CARE & Education Specialist of the Year and is the President of Health Care & Education for the American Diabetes Association.

1. Review epidemiologic data for diabetes and diabetes-related complications.
2. Discuss current standard of care recommendations for intensification of glucose-lowering therapies to meet individualized glycemic goals.
3. Appreciate the importance of considering key comorbidities (e.g., cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease) when formulating a person-specific diabetes treatment plan.
4. Recall current targets and recommendations for blood pressure and cholesterol management in diabetes to mitigate risk of complications.
5. Develop a person-centered treatment plan when presented with a diabetes patient case.

SAFETY FIRST: A CASE-BASED DISCUSSION ON KEY SIDE EFFECTS, TOLERABILITY, AND COUNSELING CONSIDERATIONS IN METABOLIC MANAGEMENT

1. List common, rare, and controversial adverse event and safety considerations with glucose-lowering therapies.
2. Discuss key safety considerations for use of glucose-lowering therapies in patients with key comorbidities (e.g. chronic kidney disease) and/or advancing age.
3. Review key risk mitigation strategies when initiating glucose-lowering medications.
4. Discuss the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in informing medication adjustments and optimizing safe use of glucose-lowering agents.
5. Develop a person-centered risk mitigation and counseling plan when presented with a diabetes patient case.
