Day 1 Speaker: Dr. Sandra Benavides, Pharm D, FCCP, FPPAG
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, School of Pharmacy
Dr Benavides received her Pharm D from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed a general practice residency at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center and a Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Fellowship at Ohio State University. She is currently an Assistant Dean for Assessment and Quality Programs at PCOM School of Pharmacy in Suwanee, Georgia. She serves as the lead editor in the Pediatric Pharmacotherapy and the Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Self Assessment books. Dr Benavides has practiced in pediatrics in acute care, ambulatory, and community practice. She is dedicated to the education of pharmacists to work towards improved care for pediatric patients.
Day 1- October 13th, 2023:
Updates in the management of asthma
Objectives:
- Characterize risk factors for an asthma exacerbation in pediatric and adult patients
- Summarize the role of biologic treatment in the pathophysiology of asthma
- Review updated treatment guidelines for the treatment of asthma
- Implement a treatment plan for long-term control for patients with asthma
- Discuss strategies to educate patients to improve and maintain management of asthma
Speaker Day 2 &3: Joshua Caballero, PharmD, BCPP, FCCP
University of Georgia, College of Pharmacy
Dr. Joshua Caballero completed a BA in Psychology from the University of Florida and received his PharmD from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Afterwards, he completed a psychiatric residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a pharmacotherapy fellowship at The Ohio State University. Dr. Caballero is board certified in psychiatric pharmacy and has worked extensively with underserved populations including establishing pharmacy outpatient clinical services. Dr. Caballero’s research interests include the effects of psychotropic agents in various populations and their impact on cognition, health literacy in HIV, and pharmacy education. He has presented many times at national conferences, secured extramural funding, and published in academic peer-reviewed journals. He has been the recipient of several teaching and advising awards at the University and national level.

Objectives:
- Recognize and classify symptoms of different substance use disorders
- Explain typical comorbidities and etiologies of substance use disorders
- Describe laws for dispensing and administrating supplies and rescue medication (i.e., needles, naloxone)
- Recommend pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of substance use disorders
- Differentiate and compare various treatment options for opioid management
- Recognize the differences between cannabinoid products and their role in pain management
- Define an appropriate patient specific treatment for individuals with substance use disorders including monitoring parameters
- Counsel patients and caregivers in regards to substance use disorder treatment
- Counsel patients and caregivers regarding the use of cannabinoid products
Day 3 – October 15th:
Psychiatry Hot Topics
Objectives:
- Describe the pharmacologic properties and role of newer antipsychotic agents
- Describe the pharmacologic properties and role of newer antidepressants
- Recognize pharmacologic differences between newer long acting injectable antipsychotics
- Discuss new treatment strategies for Alzheimer’s disease
- Identify the optimal treatment strategies for managing psychiatric complications in Alzheimer’s disease
